Can I see a private paediatrician without a referral in the UK?

Yes. You don’t always need a GP referral to see one of our private paediatric consultants. If you’d like to book an appointment without a referral, just give us a call—we’re happy to guide you through the process. While private healthcare is accessible without an NHS GP referral, some insurance providers or specific services may require one, so it’s always worth checking in advance.

How To Book An Appointment

First, click the ‘Book an Appointment button to be be directed to our booking portal. Next, follow these steps to help you to complete your booking:

Now that you have selected which practician you wish to visit, please now select which service you are looking for. If it is your first time visiting them, please select 'Initial Consultation'. If you are looking for a follow-up, select 'Followup Consultation'

Childhealthy provides clinics on multiple sites including The Portland Hospital in Marylebone and The Cromwell Hospital in Kensington.

Step 5: Confirm booking

Once you have found the right appointment, click the green ‘Proceed to the confirmation button.’ A booking summary can be found down the right-hand side of the page for clarity. You will then be prompted to log in or register for your Childhealthy online portal account or sign in as a guest using a password that will be emailed to you.

If you are self-funding payment is taken at the time of booking, all payments are refundable if cancelled. If the visit is covered through health insurance, details are required to make the booking.

How much does an appointment cost?

Fees vary by the specialist or therapist seen. Our general paediatric appointment fees start from £330, reduced to £290 for self funding families who do not have health insurance.

Vaccinations, diagnostic tests and medicines are not included in the appointment fee.

It is important that you understand the cover provided by your health insurance, where shortfalls may arise, to gain pre-authorisation for all appointments and tests. If any appointment, diagnostic test, vaccination is not pre- authorised, this is considered self funded.

Do you accept private health insurance?

Yes. Childhealthy specialists are registered with most health insurance companies. Pre-authorisation is required for the individual specialist or therapist seen. The extent of cover depends on your insurance policy and some insurance companies may not cover the full cost of the consultation. Your policy may include an excess which is an amount you will need to pay directly to Childhealthy.

Are there any additional charges beyond the consultation fee?

In some cases, blood tests, scans or x rays may be requested by a Childhealthy specialist to investigate your child’s symptoms. If your visit is covered by health insurance, pre-authorisation from your insurance company is needed for any investigations and you will be liable for any limits exceeded on your insurance policy. Vaccines and medicines are also charged separately and many insurance companies do not cover the costs of vaccines, so please do check your policy coverage.

Do you offer payment plans or financial assistance for treatment?

What Happens During The Consultation

During your appointment, one of our professionals will carry out an assessment of your child’s health. You will be asked questions about their symptoms, medical history and family history.

A physical examination will usually be carried out, and your child may be recommended for further testing, such as a blood test. If your child requires further treatment, this will be scheduled promptly, and your consultant will discuss their diagnosis and treatment options with you.

What do I need to bring to the appointment?

Any information that you think may be helpful for us relating to your child’s health. Please bring your baby’s red book, GP referral letter if you have one, any relevant previous clinical correspondence, test results or health records. If you forget these, don't worry, it will not affect the appointment.

How long will the appointment last? General Paediatric appointments typically last between 20 and 30 minutes but duration can vary.

What happens on the day of the appointment?

Please arrive 15 minutes before your allocated appointment time. Although you have already registered your child’s details, the hospital administrative staff will once again confirm details and will ask for credit card details to cover any additional charges from the hospital if you are self-paying for the visit. We will discuss with you and your child the reason for your visit, examine your child and make any recommendations and plans for follow-up visits. Blood tests and x-rays if needed can usually be done on the day of the visit. Some scans may require a separate appointment, but we will advise you and support you with any questions.
