Obesity Screening in Children and Young People
Helping children achieve a healthy future
Childhood obesity is a growing concern, and early screening can make all the difference in supporting a child’s long-term health. At Childhealthy, we provide a comprehensive obesity screening and complications clinic, designed to assess your child’s health, identify any underlying causes, screen and treat any complications. We then offer tailored guidance to help families create a healthier lifestyle.

Is an obesity screening right for my child?
Many parents wonder if their child’s weight is within a healthy range, especially as growth patterns vary widely. Our specialist-led clinic provides 1-hour individualised appointments to give you clarity and support. You may consider a screening if you have concerns about:
✔️ Rapid or excessive weight gain
✔️ Difficulty managing portion sizes or eating habits
✔️ Low energy levels or difficulty staying active
✔️ Family history of Type 2 diabetes or other weight-related conditions
✔️ Emotional well-being, including confidence and social interactions due to excess weight
What does the screening involve?
Our holistic approach goes beyond just measuring weight and BMI. We take the time to understand your child’s unique health profile, considering:
🔹 Growth and weight trends over time
🔹 Pubertal assessment, menstrual irregularities
🔹 Any underlying medical conditions such as thyroid disease or screening for complications such as sleep apnoea or PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) secondary to obesity
🔹 Blood tests where needed, to check for pre-diabetes, Type 2 diabetes. Other tests including, lipid profile, thyroid function and, and vitamin deficiencies
🔹 Other investigations such as Liver scans to look for fatty liver
🔹 Eating habits, portion sizes, and nutritional balance
🔹 Physical activity levels and lifestyle factors
We work closely with paediatric dieticians and other specialists to provide tailored nutritional guidance and support.
What happens after the screening?
Following the assessment, you will receive clear, practical advice on next steps, which may include:
- Monitoring strategies for home and school
- Referral to a dietitian for additional support
- Further medical investigations, if required
Our goal is to empower families with the knowledge and support they need to make positive, lasting changes to their child’s health as well as treat complications early.
Depending on whether the young person has complications such as Type 2 Diabetes, we may also initiate medical management such as metformin, GLP-1 analogs and/or referral to bariatric surgeons.
